Summary

Listening length: 11 hours

Lisa Jewell returns with a scintillating new psychological thriller about a woman who finds herself the subject of her own popular true crime podcast。

Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summers crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair。 Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday。 They are, in fact, birthday twins。

A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school。 Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series。 She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life。

Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast。 Slowly she starts to realise that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home。

But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears。 Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat。

Who is Josie Fair? And what has she done?

A really good dark and twisty read。 I really didn’t know, and still don’t know what and who to believe! I liked how the narrative of this book of this book was presented, different approach and definitely adding to the drama that slowly unfolds, but is still utterly captivating。 Would I listen to the podcast? Yes! And watch the Netflix version? Yes!

A page turner from the first page。 One of my fastest reads, I highly recommend it。

Wtf… It’s annoying because it’s one of those books that potentially have a mic drop twist at the ending … only to leave it up to interpretation for the reader。 Which… is hard to do considering how much we still didn’t know。 I finished with a big ole frown on my face。 Lots of YUCK too in this story。

I really enjoyed the writing style , switching between "Netflix show" and 3rd person POV。I thought it would be confusing and it wasn't。 The story was good and disturbing。Until the last page, I still don't know what is true!!! Nyelesaiin ini cuma beberapa hari saking penasaran sama ceritanya! Aku pun udah lama nggak baca mystery thriller yang seseru ini。 Intense story and each chapter is short you want to keep turning the page。 Sepanjang cerita sebel banget sama karakter Josie, tapi di bagian akhir dibuat mikir, "who's telling the truth?"。 Definitely one of the best book I read in 2023。 Nyelesaiin ini cuma beberapa hari saking penasaran sama ceritanya! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Warning: Spoilers ahead!!。。。。。。。。。Overall I like the book, but I had to suspend my disbelief for Alix’s poor life choices。 Inviting podcast guests into her home instead of a separate office? Inviting a guest back to her home multiple times when that guest was caught on her Ring camera looking through her windows and rifling through her recycling? Inviting a pedophile over for dinner at her home around her children? Leaving her son alone in a house with a woman he finds scary? All this and more o Warning: Spoilers ahead!!。。。。。。。。。Overall I like the book, but I had to suspend my disbelief for Alix’s poor life choices。 Inviting podcast guests into her home instead of a separate office? All this and more on a list of questionable choices that I find myself not being able to justify even considering her journalistic curiosity。 Great lesson to trust your gut。 Watching Josie’s character unravel from innocuous suburban mom to something much more sinister kept me turning the pages though。 This story’s twistier than I imagined when I first picked it up。 I enjoyed the back and forth pivot between the Netflix show and the events of the story。 It really added to the suspense。 。。。more

Require a little bit of big brain to comprehend the ending, the plot hole?? It was entertaining but it was also a lot of questions in my mind that remain unanswered until now。

4。5 stars - great pacing made me fly through this book。 Loved the twisted truths, the descriptive language, and the dark subject matter。 Author was able to weave in modern technology (podcasts, streamers) in a way that didn’t feel cringe

Audio book felt like I was listening to a true crime podcast 10/10

Megan Willman

This book was good! The outcomes in the story weren’t necessarily surprising, but I kept wanting to read and see if my guesses were right。 I’d say it’s pretty weird and engaging。

Always love a lisa Jewell book but this one was especially 🤌🏼🤯 thinking about the title after reading 🫠 ended not knowing what or who i believed

Ashley

Wow! The audiobook narration was an amazing production! I was hooked the whole time listening。 Definitely would recommend this book to my friends!

I read over 70% of this book in one day because I seriously, solemnly, could not put it down。 A part of it felt quite predictable, others senseless and kind of forced, but the bits that remained completely unanswered and untied until the very end made the read worth it。 I must also bring out that the book was written so cleverly, that I could even empathize with the twisted mind of the main character。 After all, even if we don’t like to admit it, darkness is just as human as everything else。

Jane Hinton

Not your average thriller。 Good for a rainy Sunday or airplane ride。

Ella Hunt

Ahhhhh I don’t know what to believe! This is my favorite thriller since The Silent Patient。 I listened to it and loved the British accents。 The true crime podcast style made it seem real enough that it really spooked me。 4。4。

Lindsey Ferguson

Read in one sitting。 Literally could not put it down。

Alissa Menicucci

Didn’t see that one coming…

Chantal Desjardins

I’m almost hoping there’s a sequel to this because I couldn’t put it down…but I don’t like not closed endings。

this is the first lisa jewell book i’ve read and it won’t be the last, that’s for sure! the ending left me unsatisfied。 i still believe josie is badshit crazy, regardless of the ending。 and im just left confused!!! it was a good read but took some effort to get into at first。 lisa jewell loves those details。 i will say, i liked it and am excited to talk about it in book club!

Katie Trenney

4。5 ⭐️ Big Verity vibes at the end - who do you believe?? What’s the truth?? A definite page turner - kept me guessing and turning pages quickly the entire read
